Have you ever noticed that so
many piano students never really learn to read music or retain what they have learned? Or, the student can play music
or scales from memory but doesn't comprehend what they are playing? Why do so many students give up on piano lessons
before they start to play songs?
When
I was taking piano lessons, and even in college I remember how excited I was for that first piano lesson! I thought,
"this is awesome, now I'll be able to play piano!". Instead all I learned was how to play scales, chord
progressions, and piano pieces that I would never use again! I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did, but all I ever
wanted to learn was how to sight read a song and play piano so I could pick up any piece of music and play a song to self
accompany myself. While my education was priceless, it wasn't until I got out on my own that I started to focus
on playing songs so I could accompany my voice students and myself.
Using the principals of music I had learned in college
and the knowledge from my own experience of what really "works" I have created a method where students will learn
to read music (notes, rhythm, keys, chords) BEFORE they tackle scales and more difficult piano pieces .
Whether it is your goal
to self accompany or to learn to be a solo pianist all ages will benefit from my method of teaching as they become EXCITED
and CONFIDENT in their ability and are able to SEE themselves grow in their new skill, giving them a solid foundation and
encouraging them to keep playing!
Playing
by memory is great, and scales are important , but I discourage my students from EVER doing that in the beginning, it defeats
the purpose of learning to READ the music!
We need to change the perception of the run-of-the-mill piano lesson and realize
that learning how to play piano and read music can be FUN and REWARDING!
